The entire island is covered by our safari, from south to north and back. From the eastern lowlands, which slowly transition into calm days and beautiful beaches, to the western side, which is rugged with sheer cliffs along its shoreline, we experience different terrain. We take care and consideration when driving on and off the road while on the safari. All visitors will be picked up at the scheduled time from our office in Argassi and taken to our starting location just within Laganas. Here, instructions will be given and safety precautions discussed. Before we leave for the safari, there will be a quick brief on the schedule for the day.
At the historic Venetian church tower in the picturesque mountain village of Kikomenos, we make our first stop. Off the beaten path, we stop by the island’s smallest village, Loucha & Giri, which has a population of just 20 people. We’ll pause here at 10 a.m. for a quick coffee break. The highest point on the island, Vrachiona, will be our next visit. where you can see the entirety of Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and the Greek mainland in the distance from a height of 1000 meters (3000 feet).
We see the cross of Kampi and learn about its history as we go farther north. On this side of the island, you will also be able to admire the stunning coastline’s rough beauty. You have till 12:30 to either pack a lunch or indulge in Greek food, which is served at discounted rates for our visitors. Following the break for lunch, we proceed past Exo Chora, where you can observe the island’s oldest olive tree, into Monies, and into the sleepy hamlet of Anafonitria. We have a little stop just outside of Anafonitria where you may sample some local wine and see some rugs, lace, honey, and wine.
Then comes one of the most well-known locations on earth: the shipwreck, which offers a breathtaking perspective of the Ionian Sea’s deep blue water. As we pass through the village of Volimes, our next stop is the crystal-clear waters of Makris Gialos, where we can swim and take pictures. From there, we continue to the naturally occurring salt pans of Alykes. By the time the tour is through (4 pm), we will have visited the gorgeous Zakynthos towns of Alykanas, Amoudi, Gerakari, and Kalipado and seen their huge olive and lemon orchards, vineyards, and plains. As you visit the island, our drivers and guides will tell you local legends and historical facts about Zakynthos throughout the day.
On request, we can make a stop in any of the villages we are traveling through so that you can take pictures, ask questions, and learn more about the history of Greece and Zakynthos. A day spent on the Jeep Safari Land Rover Experience is a day of pure escape, a chance to forget about all of your concerns and revel in the sensation of being liberated and completely at ease.
Remember to pack your swimsuit, camera, sensible shoes, cash for lunch, and refreshments.
